About this collection

Marquette alumnus Edwin A. Shanke (BA '32, MA '37) worked in Germany as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press (AP) from 1937-1942. This digital collection provides access to Shanke's three albums of photographs depicting his travels across Europe, his over 100 letters and cables sent to family in the United States, and selected wire copy that Shanke drafted as an AP reporter documenting Europe's descent into war.

In addition to digitizing these portions of the Shanke collection, staff created a timeline highlighting events during Shanke's service from 1937-1942, and they used StoryMapJS t0 provide a narrative of Shanke's two European vacations. For more information about the complete Shanke collection, visit our finding aid.
