Notes	Middle school student Eva Black Bear by tipi on school grounds Verso caption: We set up this teepee on our school grounds this year to show visitors how Indians lived many years ago. This one is made of canvas, but in the old days my grandfathers made their teepees from buffalo hides. They built their fires in the center of the teepee. To keep the inside from getting all smokey they moved the 'smoke flaps' that you see at the top. They are tied to the poles in back, and by moving the smoke flaps just right, all the smoke goes out the top. It was very simple, and my grandfather says it was warm, even in the coldest winters.
